Gysbrecht Thys
Gysbrecht Thys (1617 in Antwerp – 1684 in Antwerp), was a Flemish Baroque painter.
==Biography==
According to Houbraken he was born in Antwerp and became a portrait painter in the style of Anthony van Dyck.〔 (Gysbrecht Thys Biography ) in ''De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen'' (1718) by Arnold Houbraken, courtesy of the Digital library for Dutch literature〕 Houbraken took his information from Cornelis de Bie's Het Gulden Cabinet, p 412.〔
According to the RKD He was baptized in the St.Jacobskerk in 1617 and married Catharina Lodewijcx in 1650.〔(Gysbrecht Thys ) in the RKD〕 According to De Bie he was still alive and living in Antwerp at the time of publication (1661).〔 No known works survive - all portraits previously attributed to him have since been reattributed to others.〔 The later biographer Jacob Campo Weyerman claimed he saw a few of his paintings in Breda and could vouch for their close similarity to Van Dijck.〔(De levens-beschryvingen...Volume II ), p 218, on the digital library of the University of Utrecht〕 Weyerman especially admired a set of portraits ("to the knee") of the Flemish painter Jan van Kessel and his wife.〔
